Back before some no-named bastards took it away from us and started pawning off plastic click-board pieces... this is the game that really set me into the world of Role-playing. Now i started on Marvel Superheroes back in the day.. but the HOURS of fun I had attaching my fingers to themselves and painting tiny details on a 1.5 inch piece of pewter was priceless.
Guess this is where my taste for strategy came about. When Warhammer came around, I just couldn't get into it. It lacked the personable feel of Mechwarrior... and I just didn't have the heart to purchase all the pieces (although I still have some that I built and painted as a form of stress-relief... I'm odd like that)
It was all about the rebellion against House Davion and then fending off those pesky clans, baby!

I remember when it was a computer game, and a damn hard one.
Do Warhammer-esque games count as RPGs?

I've always thought that a role-playing game involves anything that has characters and a story...so even if it's a mini based battle system if there's RP done it counts.
I did a lot of Battletech when i was a kid as well and there was always a story...otherwise it was always just move/turn/fire all weapons ;)

But wouldn't that make just about every game an RPG?

Life is an RPG man, in our everyday lives we alter ourselves in many ways (even if only slightly) depending on who we interact with.
Fragments of perception ;)

I remember Mechwarrior vaugely from computer game reviews, and strategies thereof in a magazine from long ago. It seemed hideously complicated at the time to me. Maybe it had something to do with the fact I was still in grade 5 or something like it.
I personally loved Theme Hospital. I still do. All those patients with whacky diseases... and stranger cures! I never got enough of those announcements either.
Anyone else have fond memories of other old, out of date games? Share the nostalgia and the memories!

Untima 9 is an RPG that's a spoof of the Ultima series. It's kind of out of date, because it has 16-bit graphics, but it's still a great game.

I've only witnessed those plastic mechwarriors, guess the pewter ones were before my time. Always thought that paying that much for a little piece of plastic was crazy...
...but then again, i did start on Warhammer, which is paying an awful lot for lots of little bits of plastic....
I found IK Warmachine to be great, felt alot more personal after playing Warhammer for however long i had been. Definately think i had the most fun with that one.
as for computer game RPG's, the Fallout series does it for me :D

I played some Warhammer 40,000 myself. I was big into the Space Marines, the Dark Angel chapter especially. I painted one squad, I think, but never actually played. It was just a really fun set of rules and the painting was, as Felix said, a stress reliever. Odd how that works out.

You're like the son god never wants me to have :D
I'm still drillin' Bethesda for a position to work on Fallout 3. Still the best video game series IMHO.
...Damn.. now I want to reinstall and play through 1 and 2 again instead of working... look what you made me do!

do it! succumb to the chosen one! go find Water Chips for Vault 13/A GECK for Arroyo (whichever one takes your fancy :P)
i think those are the only games that, despite how many times i play them, i never get sick of them. hell, i even went and bought the X-Box one (didn't live up to Fallout 1 and 2 whatsoever, stupid bloody Interplay even went and mangled the SPECIAL system.) (ADDITION: i found it alright to play, if you forget that its part of the Fallout Series :P)
hell, Fallout even inspired me to create my own Post-Apocalyptic world :P
and if i was your son, you would have been a father at 6 years of age.
I was big into the Space Marines, the Dark Angel chapter especially.
I was tearin up the board with Chaos Marines - Iron Warriors legion. but i also dabbled in Eldar and Space Marines. Out of all three of those, i was only decent with the Iron Warriors :P With the Eldar and Space Marines, the army setups i had relied lots on tactics (i seem to be really bad with tactics) so for my Iron Warriors, they're packed full with as many of the biggest bloody guns they can wield. screw tactics, i'll just shoot the crap out of my opponent instead :D HOORAH!
and yeah, Painting was my favourite passtime of the hobby as well.[/list]

You remind me of one of my favorite adages: if in doubt, set something on fire. And with flamethrowers on the market, everything is suddenly flammable!
Alright, how about another nostalgic game people still love? I enjoy the sins of emulation, and I discovered the joys of FFV that way. The original debut of the job system made for so many fond memories... replaying it repeatedly also exposed me to the fact that Chemists are the most friggin powerful class in the game! Well, as long as you had the right reagents.
No, I am still not playing a White Mage SCC!!!
